This Week In Paradise....

First let me start with two of my very dear friends Judy and John....they have been together since high school and I'm sure have shared many sodas together...I thought it was time we got a picture of this great couple...this is what love is all about...best Friends first...last...and always...they are from Maine and some of the nicest people you will ever meet....there are a lot of them here in Englewood that's one of the reasons it makes being here a little slice of paradise...

We had our spring art fair on Dearborn Drive all weekend and several thousand people showed up to see all the creative works that the talented people in this part of the country put on display....

My friend Jim is an outstanding wildlife sculptor and turns his art into the most beautiful bronzes you will ever see...He is also a good Texas Hold'em player and hard to beat...

Went golfing this week with my friends Bob and Kathy...we all had a great time and some even had great rounds...unfortunately I wasn't one of them...Made several new friends two of them on my foursome were Wayne and Tim....the course was in Sarasota and...as you can see...was gorgeous...down here you never can predict what you will see out on the course...with all the birds and water it's always a treat to just be out there...how could you not have a great time?......

I took another good friend...Jack Lee... out kayak fishing on the bay yesterday and the result was a top of the slot red that weighed in at seven pounds and a twenty inch trout...those were just the ones we kept...a great day on lemon bay...

T.W.C.G. First Easter and Grandpa's To Many To Count....

Easter weekend started out with one of my favorite groups....Smoked Mullet Band...they were at Stump Pass on Friday and were in top form....Kenny Rose sang a couple of songs with the group and a great time was had by all...If you go...great wings and plenty of room for all...the wait staff is on the ball and very friendly.....

Well it looks like The World's Cutest Granddaughter had a wonderful Easter..I know its her second one but the first one didn't count...she was only a couple of months old...this one was very special with Daddy back home from the desert....

She got to have her first Easter Egg hunt she and her best friend had a great time....

I love the ears...how can this not be the cutest thing you ever saw....

She looks like she had a rough day...but it sure is great to see them all back together again....This is what angels look like when they sleep....

I got to eat two Easter meals..the first at noon with my landlady and her family...observe the cook in the background......who are also good friends of mine..and the second with Ronnie, Helen and Richard....I couldn't have asked for a better day...I had coffee with Lisa in the morning and got to visit a while with her as well...so all in all it was a fun Easter Sunday....

The flags and smiles are for the final montage of patriotic songs that this one man band.. who goes by the name of "Ken McBride (himself)"...does at the end of his four hour set at T.J. Carneys....He was fantastic and even throws in some broadway, oldies, and jokes into his act..and it truly is an act...he entertains the whole time...very similar to my friend Frank in the last blog on St. Paddy's Day....

The food and the company at T.J. Carneys was fantastic...we had some good laughs and some great entertainment...you can't ask for more than that.....

Well that's all for now....sorry about some of the picture quality...but it's not bad for a camera phone with no flash taken at night.....

A Wee Bit O' This and a Wee Bit O' That....

Did a little celebrating on St. Paddy's Day weekend but it was bittersweet...We had a going away party for our friend Sandy...she got a great job in North Carolina but will have to move away from us for awhile....We didn't lose her forever..it will just seen that way...she still has her house down here in Paradise but she will only come for a visit once in awhile...she said she still wants to retire down here...but that's a long way off...she and dog..Bonnie...are going to be missed by all the gang...

Kenny Rose..her Nephew by marriage put on a final going away performance for her and we all had a great time at Braymor's Pub...Sandy and some of the girls performed while Kenny played the Unicorn song...You know the one I mean...about the unicorn missing the Ark..we had long necked geese, cats, rats, elephants and...pictured here their interpretation of the Alligator...That's Sandy on the right...We will all miss you Sandy....Best of Luck and stay in touch....

Went back up to T.J. Carney's a couple of days ago with Richard and Ronnie...Eddie and the Edsels were fantastic...all rock and roll favorites from the 50's and 60's..I never thought I'd see the day when Rock and Roll was what the old people listened to...Hey...Baby Boomers...lets face it...we have become the old folk...but at least we will go down doing the Electric Slide and the Twist...Oooh!...I think my back just went out.....

On St. Paddy's Day I went over to the Moose Club for Corn Beef and Cabbage...my poker playing buddy Frank got a gig there and he was fantastic...he kept the crowd going for hours with fun, games and music...he sang, joked and played keyboard and really kept all of us involved in a good time all night...He was a music teacher by trade but has always done gigs to help support the family...he said it was more like a musician who taught school on the side...you can really tell he has a great time doing it...he is supposed to be down here on vacation...he has more gigs than he can handle...

I had a book signing last week at Village Gifts and Coffee Shop here on Dearborn Street...it was great and I even sold a few books...still can't get used to the whole "Author" thing...but I guess I am...my publisher says he wants to do a hardcover version with all three books in one hardcover edition...that would be fantastic..book three won't be published by itself because it is more like a prequel...I wrote eight stories about Marine training and my trip from California to Vietnam by ship..good stories but not War Stories which is what Southfarm Press publishes...they will be great for the hardcover but not as a stand alone since it really is the beginning of my journey into war....

My friend Bill up in the frozen north loves to snowmobile real fast...when you hit a ditch at 70 miles an hour and come to an abrupt stop this is what happens to your arm and wrist...I have pictures of the actual bones protruding from the flesh but I'll spare you the gruesome sight...this is bad enough..this is what it looks like "fixed"...if you can call it that...Bill says he'll be ready to go again next winter...Hey, Bill come down here...if you fall off a jet ski all you do is get wet......

Ronnie's son's girlfriend Llana got a once in a lifetime opportunity...she had an interview with Archbishop TuTu for a project hosted by Project Explorer...Wow..that will be something to tell the grand kids.....

My favorite coffee shop hostess and all around great person Christi caught a couple of Snook that she has been after for a while...it seems that these fish were used to getting a free meal from the bait tanks at her family's bait shop and marina...she has tried every lure she had to get them hooked up for a fight to no avail...I gave her one of my secret weapon lures...the only lure I have used down here all season to catch every type of fish in the bay...no brag, just fact....and look what she caught first time out...nice going Christie...don't tell anybody our secret or there won't be many fish left in the Bay..By the way...this young lady is a certified Boat Captain going for her Master Captain's license and just completed certification for fire and rescue aboard any vessel...way to go.....

On a final note...some of you may have already seen this but just in case we forget...remember..what ever you think about the politics of this war we are in..and it is a war...the men and women who stand on the front lines and those who support them are doing what they feel is the right thing...Don't ever forget the sacrifice they have made and are making every day...Say thank you to a vet..past or present..and let them know that you know how important they are to keeping this country free...

It is called...Generations of Valor...Pearl Harbor survivor Houston James of Dallas embraced Marine Staff Sgt. Mark Graunke Jr during a Veterans Day commemoration in Dallas yesterday. Graunke lost a hand, a leg and an eye when he defused a bomb in Iraq last year.

Welcome Home Travis.....

Home at last..Travis got back to Edwards AFB a few days ago and all is right with my world once more...Shannon and Dakota were on hand to meet the plane as it landed at Edwards and thankfully...Travis gets a couple of weeks on base leave to settle back in again...

Even thought Dakota was a little shy at first...Travis says she is coming around and he is spending a lot of time with her to get her used to seeing her Daddy again...the six months he missed with her was a major growing stage and of course she became very attached to her Mom...but I have a feeling that it won't take long for her to be a Daddy's Girl again...

Welcome back son...and thank you for your service to this country..we all are very proud of you...

Bits & Pieces....

I had a few photos in my "Save for the blog" folder left over so I thought I would share them with you...

The first two are of a sight no sane parent ever wants to see....your child with a full body.. or in the case...full arm tattoos...I knew he was kidding when he sent these pictures...but just for a split second I thought "What have you done"...Now don't get me wrong..tattoos are OK but I personally think they should be a private matter and not on public display no matter what you are wearing...In this case my son Kyle had purchased a new product available at the super store of tasteless merchandise...Spencer Gifts...they are sleeves that you can slip over your arms and legs to have some fun with friends and family..actually I think it's a great idea...everyone thinking of doing something like this should go buy these first and wear them 24/7 for at least a month then decide if they really want to do this to their body for the rest of their lives....

My son Travis has a couple and yes I think they are a bit much but...for the most part they are covered and one on his back will end up being a masterpiece when it's finished...It's an eagle and it has been born from trying to cover up a previous tat that was not up to par...the end result will be OK but nearly twice as large as the original screw up...When it is finished I will post it here for all the world to see...

I even promised Travis that I would finally relent and get a tat of my own...after all a Marine without at least one tattoo can hardly call himself a true Marine...I've thought about it over the years and even with all the crazy shit I've been through I never did end up with one..I've decided it is time and of course the one I chose will be Marine Corps related....I've included the main part of it here...the bulldog...there will be some additional writing and maybe a little more detail...this work of art will be on my right shoulder and will serve two purposes...it will be a salute to the Marines and also cover up a scar from a bullet wound incurred in Vietnam..I thought it was nice irony....I will also debut the end result right here on the blog...stay tuned!

Here is a pic of myself and the most controversial artist at the wine walk (see previous blog)..she was displaying mostly nude and all nude paintings and my friend Jim suggested that perhaps a picture is worth a thousand words when it comes to how much controversy this artwork created..needless to say..within the first hour of the display the full frontal nudity had mysteriously disappeared and a more modest display remained...Now I'm all for nudity but there were several children from the neighborhood and yes several children dragged along on the wine walk while their parents got wasted..there truly is no lack of stupidity even from people who should know better....

I stopped by the Lemon Tree art gallery here in town and was surprised to find a friend of mine who I had only seen once or twice this season...working there..Suzy is an accomplished artist in her own right and she now gets to sell other artist's work..but she is happy to have the job and husband Rusty and Buster (big dog just outside of picture) are on hand to support her....Suzy get them to put some of your work in there!!

And last but not least here a few recent shots of T.W.C.G....Daddy will be home any day now and all will be right with the world once more...I think Mommy has done a super job keeping baby Dakota in touch with her dad...

Here is one pic she fell into her toy baskets trying to get closer to Daddy's picture...

If you have the whole jar why settle for just one....
